Be a brainiac

If we are what we eat, it makes sense to eat well. A balanced diet means higher energy levels and vitality and it helps us maintain a healthy body weight, improve sleep patterns and gain greater concentration levels.

If you want to get the balance of your diet right, use the eatwell plate. The eatwell plate makes healthy eating easier to understand by showing you the types and proportions of foods we need to have a healthy and well balanced diet.

Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes, pasta (choosing wholegrain varieties is the best option).

Include some meat, fish, eggs and legumes such as kidney beans or chickpeas, dairy foods like milk, cheese and yoghurt and try to decrease the number of foods and drinks that are high in fat and/or sugar.

Gabriella and Taylor need to make sure that they eat a healthy breakfast so they don’t get hungry half-way through an important double science class. Eating wholemeal toast or a bowl of muesli and a glass of orange juice will give them energy throughout the morning, and the orange juice contains loads of vitamin C, which will help to protect them from infections.

If they want a healthy snack later on in the day, they could try eating pieces of fresh fruit, a pasta pot or a filled wrap. These options are good sources of energy, which they might need for a dance routine or two!
