Troy’s Tasty Tuna Burgers

Serves 4

Tuna is a great alternative treat to beef for making burgers. They’re really easy and can be grilled or even cooked on the barbecue. Serve on toasted panini or ciabatta rolls with salad leaves, sliced cucumber and avocado.

Fresh tuna is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids – that means it’s great for the heart, so here’s to a winning team on the sports field!

Tahini is made from sesame seeds and some people are allergic to these, so check for allergies.

Ingredients:

  • 4 spring onions
  • 10g fresh coriander
  • quarter of a cucumber
  • 2cm piece fresh ginger
  • 400g fresh tuna steaks
  • 1×15ml spoon soy sauce
  • 2×15ml spoons sesame seeds (optional)
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 4 burger buns

Equipment:

  • Colander
  • Kitchen roll
  • Sharp knife x 2 (get an adult to help you)
  • Chopping board x 2
  • Grater
  • Mixing bowl
  • Weighing scales
  • Food processor/blender (or fork)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Large metal spoon

Method:

  1. Preheat the grill.
  2. Wash the spring onions, coriander and cucumber in the colander and pat dry with some kitchen roll.
  3. Finely chop the spring onions.
  4. Finely chop the fresh coriander and put to one side.
  5. Chop the cucumber into slices.
  6. Grate the ginger.
  7. Using a different chopping board and sharp knife, cut the tuna into small pieces and place into a food processor/blender. Pulse the tuna until it is roughly minced.
  8. Place the tuna into a bowl and add the chopped onions, sesame seeds (optional), coriander, grated ginger, soy sauce and black pepper.
  9. Stir until all the ingredients are mixed together.
  10. With damp hands, shape the mixture into 4 burgers.
  11. Place on a grill tray and grill until cooked. This should take about 4 minutes. Turn the burger over during cooking to ensure it is cooked right through.
  12. Slice open the burger buns and place the burger inside. Add a few slices of cucumber on top.

Top tips

If you don’t have a food processor or blender you can chop the tuna into very small pieces and mash with a fork.

Use 2×200g cans drained and mashed tuna as a cheaper alternative to tuna steaks.
